    What is VAT?

VAT stands for value-added tax. It’s an indirect tax, charged on the sale of goods and services and collected by businesses on behalf of the Government.

Businesses with a turnover above the threshold of £85,000 in any 12 months must register for VAT. They then need to charge VAT on goods and services they sell, and pay it to HMRC through a regular return (usually every quarter).

It’s also possible to register for VAT voluntarily if your income is below the threshold.

What are your responsibilities as a VAT-registered business?

As a VAT-registered business you must:

Charge VAT at the correct rate

VAT should be charged at one of three rates:

    • the standard rate of 20%
    • the reduced rate of 5%
    • a zero-rate of 0%.

Some goods and services are also exempt from VAT altogether.

    Keep records

You’ll need to keep detailed records of the VAT you charge and the VAT you pay on purchases for your business. If you import any goods to the UK, you’ll also need to follow specific VAT accounting rules for these.

Send VAT returns and make payments to HMRC

Most VAT-registered businesses file a VAT return quarterly, but some need to prepare one monthly or annually.

The deadline to file this return and pay any VAT you owe to HMRC is usually one calendar month and 7 days after the end of each VAT accounting period.

    What is a VAT accountant?

As VAT accountants, we ensure you pay the right amount of VAT to HMRC, help you with your VAT returns, and even help you claim back VAT where possible.

    We help with:

    Decoding VAT payments

Understanding how and when to make your VAT payments to HMRC can be confusing. We’ll guide you through the process, ensuring timely and accurate payments.

    Understanding VAT registration

Whether you should be VAT-registered or not depends on several factors. We’ll provide all the information you need to make the right decision for your business.

    Standard VAT vs other schemes

The standard VAT scheme isn’t always the best choice for every business. We’ll help you understand which scheme gives you the most financial benefit.

    Complying with digital accounting rules

All VAT-registered businesses need to keep digital records and file their VAT returns with compatible software under the Government’s Making Tax Digital (MTD) scheme. We can keep you compliant with the rules.
